A historic beauty and intimate cottage, this vacation rental home sits high on the west facing bank between Freeland and Greenbank, situated on one of the most exceptional spots on Whidbey Island. With panoramic, 180 degree Sound and Olympic views and a private stairway to 4+ miles of sandy walking beach, the cottage provides an ideal getaway for couples, families and artists seeking solitude and inspiration.
The owners of this property have had the cabin for almost twenty years now. John and his wife, Shelly, were married in Coupeville almost twenty-five years ago and spent the first few nights of their honeymoon at the Cliff House, a spot just a few miles down the road. They've always loved Whidbey for its beauty, close proximity to Seattle, and incredible diversity of land, views, wildlife, and sea life. They had been casually looking for a weekend getaway cabin for almost five years before finally getting a call from their real estate agent. He excitedly explained that the perfect place was about to hit the market – it was the Smugglers Lagoon Beach Cottage (also known as the Rulon property).
They drove up the next day with their oldest son (three years old at the time) and their brand new baby in tow, and walked the property with the owners Tom and Joyce Rulon. They knew immediately that this was what they had been looking for, and made an offer on the three parcels that day (Bart the caretaker's cabin, the beach cabin, and the Smugglers Lagoon Beach Cottage, which they still affectionately refer to as the “Green Cabin”).
The Green Cabin was originally built in the early 1900s. At the time John and Shelly purchased it, the cabin was in such a state of disrepair that it was slated to be torn down! They chose instead to completely gut and restore the cabin, working with a local architect and builder to restore it based on its historical plan and original foundation. The owners love staying 'up top' and especially enjoy the views of bald eagles, blue herons, passing whales, and, of course, the many container ships that always seem to be cruising by.
John and Shelly are fortunate to have Bart Rulon as resident caretaker of the property. Bart is a local treasure, having lived in the same spot for more than twenty years, bringing expert local knowledge and a naturalist's eye to the local flora and fauna. Bart is an accomplished artist as well and guests can see some of his work on display in books on our shelves.
John and Shelly's love for Whidbey Island continues strong. John explains that “my family has found Whidbey to be a source of renewal and restoration for two decades and we enjoy sharing our property with friends, family, and guests. Our beach walks, summer dinners, campfires, and occasional flag ceremonies (complete with bugle calls and formal flag procession) are at the heart of many of our family's best shared memories.”
So come visit Whidbey Island and stay at the Smugglers Lagoon Beach Cottage! Enjoy dramatic sunsets, campfires by the beach, and hikes through the nearby old-growth forest in South Whidbey State Park. Have a go at the outstanding salmon fishing from the beach, and enjoy a fine, private perch to sit and enjoy a good book or the shipping lanes. The cottage is nestled in a bald eagle reserve and adjacent to protected tidal lagoons, ensuring both privacy and abundant opportunity for wildlife viewing. We hope you'll come explore our paradise for yourself!
